The Mess

I thought I might have heard something going bump in the night but didn't think too much about it.  In the morning we were greeted by "The Mess."  The garbage can had contained bird seed and the feed bags are COB (corn, oats and barley). The bear most likely smelled the COB, then looked in and saw the garbage can and decided it was dinner time.

The bear was a little bigger that the garage door window and simply decided to expand the window a bit, both on the way in and on the way back out.  We're relatively sure it was a bear, as there were heavy black hairs all over the place.

We moved all eatables into the barn where we thought they would be safe.
The bear then went after the barn door window.

The barn door window was higher up and smaller and apparently the bear couldn't get through, though we were left with another messed up window.

We boarded up the garage window.
Since it couldn't get in the barn, the bear came back and tried some more to rip open the garage window, working hard to open the boarded up window rather than just breaking one of the other windows.

Our final solution.
Side wall done
The bear mess provided the excuse I'd been looking for to replace the old garage doors with nice new heavily insulated ones -- without any windows.  Now we will have to wait till the bears are waking up next spring and see what happens.
