Ewe Creek Bear Tracks

Morning snowMorning snow on deck

It is rare to have snow on the ground in the Grants Pass area, but on January 2nd 2004 we woke to a winter wonderland. It was cold so the snow did not melt and was there overnight.

In the morning we found there had been a visitor!

Bear tracks from garage to porch

Under the snow was our brand new flagstone walkway. Since we finished installing it, we have been encouraging visitors to come to the front door rather than using the back way.

The bear followed the walkway right up to our porch steps.

Bear tracks from porch to side
The porch must not have had any good smells, though, as the bear continued on around the side of the house without stopping.
Bear track with ruler
It looked like about six and a half inches across the footprint. We do not know how big a bear that is, but we are pretty sure it is not little and cuddly.
Bear track with claws Most front footprints were also stepped on by the rear paw. This set is slightly off center, leaving the front claw marks intact and making us wonder if we should be walking around outside after dark, though maybe the bears keep the cougars away.

We wondered where the bear went so we trailed him (or her) around our loop road and down the hill into our lower forest area where he crossed the creek, walked along the front fence, circled around back over the creek again and finally headed off through our lower meadow section where there was too much water for us to follow.

We then started backtracking to see where he had come from and found that he had been across the street walking past our neighbor's garage, up their stairs and front pathway and on past their front porch before heading over through our front forest. He stopped to check out our burn barrel but either ignored or didn't notice the garbage cans by the barn. Then he went through the carport and headed up our front walkway.

We are left wondering how often the bears come around in the night when there is no snow to show their tracks. It would be hard to spot their trail if they mostly stick to paved driveways and walkways, which this one seemed to do.
