Kartchner Caverns, AZ

Back to: Arizona 2007, Trips, Home

January 2007

The campground was somewhat gloomy with rain and heavy overcast when we arrived but the desert environment was pleasant enough and the sun did finally come out on our last day making it a much nicer place.

The Inside

It was just a short walk to the caverns where we took the Big Room cave tour. We will definitely make a point of returning during another trip to take the Rotunda/Throne tour. No photography is allowed in the caves so these two pictures were copied from a purchased state park book (and are copyrighted by the Arizona Department of Transportation). The caverns are rather impressive and the park is doing a great job of protecting the formations.

The Outside

The campground and surrounding area has many cactus plants.

I spotted this character running down the road and scrambled to grab my camera for a shot of a Roadrunner on a road run.  However before I could get focused, it left the road and I then managed to catch it in a more natural setting.

January 2011
We did make it back and even stayed in the same "best in the park" spot we had selected four years earlier.

This time we took the Rotunda/Throne Room tour and since there are no cameras allowed, here is a postcard we bought showing the Throne Room's giant "Kubla Kaun" column, which is quite impressive if you note the guy standing at the bottom of it.
