Alpaca, at the Crescent Moon Ranch

Back to: Fall 2007, Trips, Home

September 2007

These are Alpaca which are raised for their fur, used to make some very elegant clothing. The Alpaca Boutique on the grounds has a variety of items displayed and for sale. The texture of the cloth kind of reminded me of cashmere.

They seem to come in a variety of mostly solid colors though a few were multicolored.

They are rather inquisitive and if you walk slow and talk quiet, some of them will come to the fence to see who you are and what you are up to.

It would appear that only their body gets sheared.

A number of them were wearing name tags.

You are allowed to wonder the grounds on your own and are only asked to be considerate of the animals. They were mostly fed hay so picking some up from their field and offering it to them seemed reasonable. They use spitting, kicking and running away for defense but the owners have been trying hard to gentle them by treating them kindly -- and it seems to be working.
