September 2007

The park is on the Williamson River at Spring Creek. We set off down the creek to find the Logging Museum. The water was crystal clear and the creek seems more like a river.

It's a short and pleasant hike up the creek and over the foot bridge to the Museum.

The Logging Museum was started in 1947 by a donation of antique logging equipment from the Collier brothers. "The intention was to show the evolution of logging from oxen and axes to trucks and chain saws." They have a web site at www.collierloggingmuseum.info.

The museum consists of a bunch of antique equipment sitting around and is self guided with signs explaining the various pieces, such as this log loader -

a log buncher -

and a steam donkey.

Not everything is marked, though, such as this old steam traction engine. The brochure says they have a restored model, which we didn't see, but this one would do well as a "before" picture.

We happened to witness the unloading of a new donation. I wondered if he was thinking, "Dang, where's the brake on this thing?" They did get it unloaded okay though, with a little help from one of their tractors.

I assume the new addition will take a spot in their "antiques row."

There are numerous log cabins on the grounds, which appear to have been left pretty much "as they were." Viewing is accomplished simply by looking in the windows.
Then it was another pleasant walk down the creek back to the campground for a few days of relaxing.
