September 2007

Fort Rock stands out from the barren landscape as you approach it, but looks rather barren itself. It is what is called a Tuff Ring, created when molten lava hit groundwater causing a series of explosions leaving a 6,000 foot wide crater surrounded by a glassy mud tuff ring which then solidified into rock.

It's only a short hike up into the center which looks much like the surrounding desert, except for the walls of rock ringing the area. Not much to do here, but it was interesting to discover how such a thing could come to be and to actually see it up close.
We attempted to also see Hole-In-The-Ground, which is another volcanic site near Fort Rock, but failed when we gave up and turned back after a half mile of being shaken to pieces by the washboarded gravel on the 5 mile access road.
