Lava Butte

September 2007

There are several hundred of these cinder-cone volcanoes in the area. The lava flow from this one covers about 9 square miles.

Numerous rather aggressive ground squirrels are quick to greet new visitors in the parking lot and clearly expect to be fed. Had we been carrying any food, we would probably have had to give it to them as a matter of self preservation.

The top of the lava cone is about 500 feet above the forest and provides an extensive view of the miles and miles of forest land in this part of Oregon. Another cinder cone can be seen to the east.

The road to Bend, OR goes off to the north.

More forest and finally mountains to the west.

A walkway leads from the parking lot to the highest section of the volcano's rim.

There is a path around the rim with the crater in the middle.

A fire lookout station was constructed on the highest part of the rim and is in active use today.
