I need a coat of shellac to finish up this candle holder and I may drill out the center to hold a normal sized candle, or maybe not. I would have tried the center hole on the lathe but I really need a smaller end scrapper, which I don't yet have. This, I think, is a precursor to my attempting to turn some bowls or vases.

This is a snowman's head wearing a hat. Marie thought it would be really cute and I'm sure it will look much better once it's decorated.
November 2008

Another trip to the firewood stack and I was able to find a piece of Madrone big enough for this hurricane lantern base. Although it's nice enough looking as is, it will now be sent on to the art room where Marie will decorate it with some sort of painting. I'll have to wait to see what the finished product will look like.

The lathe manual says to mount the work piece by driving it on with a wooden mallet. It didn't seem that using a short length of two-by-four as my mallet was very professional so after turning a couple of little trial pieces to get the feel of it, I decided I had better make myself a mallet. A trip to the firewood pile provided me with a length of Black Oak for the handle and a section of Madrone for the head.
Hey! This is kind of fun.
